Ground Transportation for Costa Rica

Options for traveling within Costa Rica for a 21-day period

Car

The majority of people rent a car in San Jose, Costa Rica, and immediately drive to the cost. San Jose is still a developing city, so it does not have as much to offer as the pacific and Caribbean coastlines do. Ideally, a trip to Costa Rica would involve surfing on the west coast, trekking through the rain forest, and then ending up on the east coast, for some relaxing Caribbean time. I have heard that Tamarindo has some of the best surfing in Costa Rica, so I will see how it will cost to get there in a car! Renting a jeep would probably be smart do to the windy and underdeveloped roads.

Train / Bus / Air

Flying is one of the best ways to get around in Costa Rica. Because the island is small, flights are short and not too expensive. A flight to Limon is around $200 a person.

Other options

A bus from Limon to Puerto Viejo would cost around $22.

Estimate of total ground travel expenses

The total cost of traveling within Costa Rica for a three week period is... $150. If my wife and I rented that tiny car I quoted above, for 2-weeks, stayed in Tamarindo for that time range, then flew to Limon and took a bus to Puerto Viejo where we would finish our trip, our total cost would be around $150 for ground transport—2-week car rental plus bus to Puerto Viejo!
